Temples Itinerary
Malta has a
rich prehistory and has no less than twenty known temples sites. Our tour
starts with a visit to Hagar Qim, uniquely located on the south west coast
of the island. This temple site dates back to circa.3300BC, and is
particularly interesting as it has the largest and heaviest megaliths, some
weighing a staggering 20 tons. Our second temple visit includes one of the
largest sites on our islands. Tarxien Temple was the first site to be
scientifically excavated and it is unique as it has a complex of four
temples on one site. Here
you will see a unique collection dating back circa. 3000BC.
Stone idols and tablets, domestic animals carved in relief, altars and
screens decorated with spiral designs and other patterns, oracular chambers
and the largest
colossal statue in the world, 2.8 metres high known to be of the Goddess of
Fertility. Our final temple is the UNESCO's Hal Saflieni "Hypogeum",
this unique underground temple dates back to
circa.3000BC and is located
on three different levels, hewn out of the rock and it is estimated that
7000 inhumations where carried out. The most impressive part of the temple
is the "Holy of Holies". One of the prehistoric masterpieces is the
"Sleeping Lady" which was found here. Our tour ends here and we return back
to your ship. |
